Blues boss Paul Lambert hailed his team’s first half display as “absolutely brilliant” and felt that they would have beaten Sunderland but for the error which led to the Black Cats’ second-half equaliser as the game ended 1-1.

Luke Garbutt netted his second goal in two games for the Blues on the quarter-half mark but Lynden Gooch levelled for Sunderland in the second half as Town and the Black Cats drew an entertaining game 1-1 at Portman Road. Garbutt shot low under Wearsiders’ keeper Jon McLaughlin in the 15th minute as the Blues dominated the first half but Gooch profited from skipper Luke Chambers’s error on 64 to claim an undeserved equaliser for the visitors.

Town hit five at Portman Road under Mick McCarthy for the first time as the Blues thrashed deep-in-trouble Sunderland 5-2. Martyn Waghorn opened the scoring against his old club in the sixth minute, Billy Jones equalised four minutes later but Spence restored the impressive Blues’ lead when he headed home Waghorn’s corner on 27 to make it 2-1 at the break. In the second half, Waghorn created the best of the night for Bersant Celina and then Town’s fourth for David McGoldrick, Aiden McGeady pulled one back for the Wearsiders, then sub Grant Ward added the fifth a minute from time.
